Founding Statement

At a defining moment in Syria’s modern history—following the end of authoritarian rule and the start of building a new state founded on the principles of freedom, justice, and participation—there is an urgent need to strengthen the country’s institutions. Central to this task is the academic sector, both public and private universities, which must play a key role in rebuilding the nation and the state.

Recognizing the vital importance of knowledge, higher education, and academic research in shaping Syria’s future, we are proud to announce the establishment of the Syrian British Academic Association (SBAA). The SBAA is an independent, non-profit association committed to supporting Syrian academia by promoting academic and scientific collaboration between Syria and the United Kingdom.

Our vision is to provide a dynamic forum that builds lasting bridges between Syrian and British universities, contributes to the development of sound and forward-looking academic policies, and fosters a culture of excellence and critical thinking.

Objectives

1. Contributing to rebuilding Syria’s academic sector, including through support for universities and higher education institutions, curriculum development, staff training, and the exchange of academic expertise between Syria and the UK
2. Enhancing academic and knowledge-based cooperation between Syria and the UK through research partnerships, joint programmes, and collaborative, mutually beneficial projects
3. Coordinating the efforts of Syrian academics in the UK to enable their active contribution to the development of a new Syria
4. Serving as a Syrian institutional voice in the UK by coordinating with other UK-based Syrian organisations and entities to positively influence UK policies, programmes, and positions toward Syria
5. Representing Syrian academic interests in British and international academic forums, and garnering support for academic, educational, and development initiatives within Syria
6. Promoting a culture of academic freedom and critical thinking, and encouraging research that addresses key issues relevant to the Syrian context

Today, as we announce the establishment of the Association, we reaffirm our commitment to academic and human values, to constructive teamwork, and to openness. Membership is now open to Syrian academics based in the United Kingdom as well as to British academics with an interest in Syrian affairs who share our vision and goals. We firmly believe that knowledge and scholarship are the foundation of Syria’s future, and that cross-border partnerships will be a true driver of this project.
