Statement by the Syrian British Academic Association

The Syrian British Academic Association (SBAA) reaffirms its firm commitment to the unity of the Syrian Arab Republic, the integrity of its territory, and the consolidation of the values of peaceful coexistence among all components of Syrian society. SBAA further affirms its unequivocal rejection of any initiatives or practices that may undermine national sovereignty or threaten the cohesion of the Syrian social fabric.

SBAA emphasises the importance of extending the sovereignty of the state across its entire territory in a manner that promotes civil peace and ensures the protection of all communities without exception, based on full equality in rights and responsibilities, and in rejection of all forms of exclusion or discrimination.

In this context, SBAA welcomes Decree No. 13 of 2026 issued by the Presidency of the Syrian Arab Republic, recognising it as a positive step towards redressing historical injustices faced by Kurdish citizens and restoring their inherent rights, which they were deprived of under the former defunct regime, while reinforcing the principle of equal citizenship in a way that serves national stability and strengthens trust between the state and its diverse components.

SBAA also expresses its full readiness to provide academic and scientific support to universities and educational institutions in the Syrian Jazira region, following the restoration of stability and civil life, contributing to the reconstruction of educational institutions, supporting the educational process, and enhancing opportunities for sustainable development and long-term stability.

SBAA affirms that its academic and scholarly role stems from its civic duty and its firm belief that education and knowledge constitute a cornerstone in rebuilding the state and society on inclusive, just, and sustainable foundations.
